# When is the best time to take vitamin B12, and should you take it with food?

## Summary

Whenever you will remember it. B12 is water soluble, is absorbed by two routes that do not depend on a meal, and no trial has found a timing effect, so the choice is comfort: morning suits people who find it lifts their energy and want it out of the way, and the small number who find evening doses stimulating should keep it early. Food neither helps nor hinders it; alcohol at the same time reduces absorption. Drops under the tongue are pleasant but the swallowed dose does the same job.

## Effective dose

Daily for repletion, or a large dose twice a week for maintenance on a plant based diet; the weekly pattern works because about one percent of any dose gets in by diffusion whatever the stomach is doing. Retest after eight weeks if correcting a low result.

## Timing

Any time, with or without food. B12 is water soluble, is absorbed by two routes that do not depend on a meal, and has no timing effect in any trial. Morning suits people who find it lifts energy, because it is easier to remember and, for a few, evening doses feel stimulating. Drops held under the tongue are pleasant but the swallowed dose works just as well.

## Interactions

Food neither helps nor hinders a B12 supplement at the doses in capsules and drops. Very high vitamin C taken at the same moment can degrade a little B12 in some tablets, so a couple of hours apart is tidy, not essential. Alcohol with the dose is the one thing to avoid, because it reduces absorption.

## Practical framework

From the Nutri Tailor range: [methylcobalamin capsules](/products/vitamin-b12-methylcobalamin-capsules), 1000 micrograms; [cyanocobalamin drops](/products/vitamin-b12-cyanocobalamin), 98 micrograms per drop, all made in the UK. This is a summary of published research, not personal health advice. Talk to your GP or a registered nutritional therapist before changing what you take, especially if you are pregnant, have a diagnosed condition or are under ongoing care.

## Common misconceptions

That the hour matters more than the habit: for vitamin B12 the daily total and the weeks of use decide the result. That an empty stomach is always better: for vitamin B12 the answer is above, and comfort keeps people taking it.
