# When is the best time to take whey protein, and does timing matter?

## Summary

Whenever it helps you reach your daily protein total; the amount across the day matters far more than the hour. The idea of a 30 minute window after training did not survive the trials: muscle stays responsive to protein for a day or more after a session, so a shake within a few hours either side does the same job. Where whey earns its place is spreading protein evenly, 20 to 40 g at three or four meals, filling the meal that comes up short, which for most people is breakfast. On its own it digests fast; blended into porridge it digests slowly, which suits a long gap or bedtime.

## Effective dose

Daily protein at 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram of body weight if you train, 0.75 g if you do not, spread across meals; whey is a convenience for hitting that, not a supplement with a dose of its own.

## Timing

Whenever it helps you reach your daily protein total; the daily amount matters far more than the clock. The idea of a 30 minute window after training has not survived the trials: muscle stays responsive to protein for a day or more after a session, so a shake within a few hours either side of training does the same job. Where whey does earn its place is spreading protein across the day, 20 to 40 g at three or four meals, and a shake fills the meal that comes up short, often breakfast.

## Interactions

With or without food. On its own it digests fast, which suits the hour before or after training; blended into porridge or with a meal it digests slowly, which suits a long gap between meals or bedtime. Water or milk is a preference, not a rule.

## Practical framework

From the Nutri Tailor range: [unflavoured whey protein powder](/products/unflavoured-whey-protein-powder), 23.9 g of protein per 28 g scoop, all made in the UK. This is a summary of published research, not personal health advice. Talk to your GP or a registered nutritional therapist before changing what you take, especially if you are pregnant, have a diagnosed condition or are under ongoing care.

## Common misconceptions

That the hour matters more than the habit: for whey protein the daily total and the weeks of use decide the result. That an empty stomach is always better: for whey protein the answer is above, and comfort keeps people taking it.
