# When is the best time to take zinc, and should you take it with food?

## Summary

With the evening meal. Zinc on an empty stomach makes a large minority of people feel sick, and food removes that at the cost of a little absorption that does not matter at 8 to 15 mg a day. The evening also keeps zinc away from a morning iron dose and away from coffee. Choose a meal with meat, fish, eggs or dairy rather than a bowl of bran or beans, whose phytates bind it, and keep it two hours from high dose iron or calcium supplements. Cold lozenges are the exception: they work by bathing the throat and are taken through the day.

## Effective dose

Daily at maintenance doses. Anything above 25 mg a day should be a defined course of weeks with copper alongside, not a standing habit.

## Timing

With a meal, and the evening meal is the natural slot. Zinc on an empty stomach causes nausea in a large minority of people, and food removes that at the cost of a little absorption, which does not matter at 8 to 15 mg a day. The evening keeps zinc away from a morning iron dose and away from coffee. For a cold, lozenges are the exception: they work by bathing the throat, so they are taken through the day at the first sign of symptoms.

## Interactions

Yes, with food, but not with the foods that bind it hardest: a large bowl of bran or beans lowers absorption through phytates, so a meal with meat, fish, eggs or dairy is the better companion. Keep zinc two hours away from iron and calcium supplements if you take those at high doses.

## Practical framework

From the Nutri Tailor range: [zinc picolinate capsules](/products/zinc), 8 mg; [Super Zinc liquid](/products/super-zinc), 8 mg per ten drops, all made in the UK. This is a summary of published research, not personal health advice. Talk to your GP or a registered nutritional therapist before changing what you take, especially if you are pregnant, have a diagnosed condition or are under ongoing care.

## Common misconceptions

That the hour matters more than the habit: for zinc the daily total and the weeks of use decide the result. That an empty stomach is always better: for zinc the answer is above, and comfort keeps people taking it.
