# Do you need magnesium for vitamin D to work?

## Summary

The relationship is real but the marketing overstates it. The enzymes that convert vitamin D through its liver and kidney steps appear to require magnesium as a cofactor, and in the randomised trial magnesium supplementation measurably shifted vitamin D levels, with the paper concluding that good magnesium status may matter for getting vitamin D status right. What that supports is unglamorous: keep magnesium intake adequate, 300mg a day for men and 270mg for women in the UK, alongside the standard vitamin D advice of a 10 microgram daily supplement through autumn and winter. What it does not support is a required ratio, a mandatory pairing product, or taking the two at the same moment.

## How it works

Vitamin D from skin or a supplement is not active on arrival. It is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the form blood tests measure, and then in the kidneys to the active hormone. The review evidence is that all of the enzymes metabolising vitamin D appear to require magnesium, acting as a cofactor in those liver and kidney reactions (Uwitonze 2018). Low magnesium therefore has a plausible route to blunting what a vitamin D supplement achieves.

## Effective dose

Two ordinary targets, not one exotic one. Magnesium: the UK reference intakes are 300mg a day for men and 270mg for women aged 19 to 64, and the NHS cautions that more than 400mg a day from supplements can loosen the bowels short term. Vitamin D: 10 micrograms daily as the standard supplement, ceiling 100 micrograms. In the randomised trial, magnesium supplementation shifted 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations relative to placebo, which is evidence for adequacy mattering, not for megadosing either nutrient (Dai 2018).

## Forms compared

No special combined product is required, and no evidence sets a ratio between the two. Vitamin D advice in the UK is unchanged by this interaction: 10 micrograms daily through autumn and winter per government advice, with 100 micrograms a day the adult ceiling not to exceed. ## Timing

No timing rule joins the two: they do not need to be swallowed together, and neither blocks the other. Vitamin D absorbs best with a meal containing some fat. Magnesium splits comfortably across meals. The interaction lives in tissue biochemistry over weeks, not in the stomach at breakfast.

## Safety profile

Both nutrients carry ordinary, separate cautions. Vitamin D: do not exceed 100 micrograms a day as an adult without clinical advice. Magnesium: over 400mg a day from supplements can cause loose stools, and anyone with reduced kidney function involves their GP before supplementing. Nothing about taking both is riskier than taking either.

## Special populations

People most likely to be low on both at once: older adults, people on long-term proton pump inhibitors, and anyone with a limited diet through winter. Government advice already singles out higher-risk groups for year-round vitamin D. Kidney conditions send magnesium decisions to the GP, and pregnancy sends the whole supplement plan to the midwife or GP.

## Common misconceptions

That vitamin D is useless without a magnesium supplement: the evidence supports adequacy, and food covers many people. That the pair must be taken together at the same time: the interaction is metabolic, not digestive, and no co-timing rule exists.
