# How long does glutathione take to work?

## Summary

**How long does glutathione take to work?** Months. A four-week trial at 500 mg twice daily changed no oxidative-stress marker (Allen 2011); a six-month trial at 250 or 1,000 mg a day raised whole-blood glutathione by about 30 percent at the higher dose, with levels falling back after stopping (Richie 2015). Building it from precursors runs on the same clock: the GlyNAC trials found no overall change at two weeks and improvements at 16 weeks in older adults who started low. ## How it works

Glutathione is the main antioxidant inside cells, made from cysteine, glycine and glutamate. Swallowed glutathione is partly broken down and partly absorbed, and body stores rise slowly as intake exceeds turnover; once intake stops, stores return to the level the body's own synthesis supports, which is why Richie 2015 saw the rise reverse.

## Effective dose

**What dose, and for how long?** 1,000 mg a day gave the larger rise at six months; 250 mg gave a smaller one (Richie 2015). Four weeks at 1,000 mg a day showed nothing (Allen 2011). So the honest course is six months at the higher dose, and the effect lasts only while it continues. There is no UK upper level and no authorised claim.

## Forms compared

**Does the form change how long it takes?** The six-month result came from plain oral glutathione capsules (Richie 2015), so the old view that swallowed glutathione is simply destroyed in the gut is not what that trial found. Liposomal and sublingual forms are sold on faster or fuller absorption but do not have a comparable six-month trial in the pool. The precursor route, cysteine from NAC with glycine, is a different product and runs on the same months-long clock.

**How quickly does glutathione start working?** Not within a month, on the trial record. Allen 2011 gave 500 mg twice daily for four weeks and found no change in oxidative-stress biomarkers. Richie 2015 gave 250 or 1,000 mg a day for six months and found whole-blood glutathione up by about 30 percent at the higher dose, with the rise gone after stopping. **When should I judge it?** Three to six months, on a blood measure if one is being followed; there is no earlier signal in the trials and nothing to feel.

Oral glutathione at 250 to 1,000 mg a day was well tolerated over six months (Richie 2015). There is no documented interaction with common prescriptions in the pool; anyone on cancer therapies takes advice, because antioxidant supplements are a specific question there.

**What slows it down or changes the reading?** Nothing common blocks absorption. Blood glutathione is measured in few laboratories and the method matters, so a single reading is a weak guide. Low glycine or cysteine intake limits the body's own synthesis, which is where the GlyNAC approach starts.
