**How long does selenium take to work?** Total plasma selenium rises within the first four weeks of daily supplementation and is approaching a plateau by 16 weeks, in the Burk 2006 dose trial in selenium-replete adults. ## How it works

Selenium works as selenocysteine inside about 25 selenoproteins, including the glutathione peroxidases and the deiodinase enzymes that convert thyroid hormone (NIH ODS). When intake is low the body prioritises these proteins, so a supplement fills them over weeks to months; once they are saturated, extra selenium goes into the selenomethionine store in blood and tissue, which is why plasma selenium keeps rising after the working measures have stopped.

## Effective dose

**What dose, and for how long?** In the deficient adults of the Xia 2010 trial, a total intake of about 49 micrograms a day was enough to optimise selenoprotein P over 40 weeks, and 35 for glutathione peroxidase. UK reference intakes are 75 micrograms a day for men and 60 for women (NHS). A 200 microgram capsule, the usual UK supplement strength, sits under the NHS guidance that 350 micrograms a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm and close to the revised European upper limit of 255 micrograms a day for total intake, so it is not a dose to combine with a second selenium product. There is no evidence that more than the reference intake shortens the timeline.

## Forms compared

**Does the form change how long it takes?** For the blood level, yes. Selenomethionine and selenised yeast raised plasma selenium markedly and quickly in the Burk 2006 trial; selenite raised it much less, because selenomethionine is built into blood proteins as a store while inorganic forms are not. Methylselenocysteine (SeMSC) behaves differently again: the 2017 pharmacokinetic study found it does not accumulate in blood proteins, so it will not push the plasma number up the way selenomethionine does, and in replete men neither form raised the working selenoproteins. So the form decides what the blood test shows; it does not shorten the time the functional measures take.

**How quickly does selenium start working?** The blood level moves first. In the Burk 2006 trial, adults given daily selenomethionine or selenised yeast showed their largest rise in plasma selenium in the first four weeks, with the level approaching a plateau by 16 weeks; selenite raised it far less. ## Safety profile

Selenium has a narrow window. Chronic intake above the European 255 microgram limit, and certainly above the NHS 350 microgram supplement guidance, brings the documented signs of excess: brittle hair and nails, a garlic odour on the breath, and gastrointestinal upset (NIH ODS). The Burk 2006 subjects took up to about 600 micrograms a day for 16 weeks under monitoring; that is a trial setting, not a target. One 200 microgram capsule is the ceiling for an unsupervised adult, and stacking it with a multivitamin that already carries a full dose is the common mistake.

## Special populations

Vegans and vegetarians: intake depends on the selenium content of soil where the crops grew, which is low across much of the UK and Europe, so low status is more common and the same timelines apply. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: requirements rise slightly; stay within the reference intake and take advice. Older adults and people on dialysis: recognised low-status groups (NIH ODS) where a baseline test is the sensible first step.

## Interactions

**What slows it down or confuses the reading?** Inflammation lowers plasma selenium and selenoprotein P independently of intake, so a level taken during illness reads low. Selenium status also depends on iodine for thyroid hormone conversion, which is why the two are assessed together in thyroid contexts. No common supplement is documented to block selenium absorption at ordinary doses.
