# How much collagen should I take, and can you take too much?

## Summary

Ten to twelve grams a day covers both uses the trials support: skin, where 2.5 to 10 g a day showed change after 90 days, and joints and muscle alongside training, where 10 to 15 g a day was used. Collagen is a protein, so there is no upper limit beyond your total protein intake, and a 15 g serving simply counts as 15 g of protein. Give it three months before judging, because that is when the studies measured change, and remember that collagen lacks tryptophan, so it tops up a diet rather than replacing meat, fish, eggs or pulses.

## Effective dose

The reference intake is none; collagen is a protein, not an essential nutrient, and the body makes its own from amino acids. 2.5 to 10 g a day is the range in the skin trials pooled in the 2021 meta analysis, taken for at least 90 days before judging. For joints and for muscle alongside training, the trials used 10 to 15 g a day. A 10 to 12 g daily serving covers both uses and is what most powders measure out. Take it for three months before deciding whether it is doing anything, because the skin studies measured change at 8 to 12 weeks.

## Safety profile

How much is too much: there is no upper limit; collagen counts toward your daily protein, and the trials used up to 15 g a day for months without harm. Collagen is digested like any protein, so the only real ceiling is your total protein intake and your appetite; 15 g of collagen is 15 g of protein. It lacks tryptophan, so it should top up a diet rather than replace meat, fish, eggs or pulses. Fish allergy rules out marine collagen entirely. Mild fullness or a fishy aftertaste from marine products are the common complaints.

## Guideline positions

NHS vitamins and minerals guidance for collagen. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet for collagen where one exists. The trial doses quoted above are from the sources listed on this page.

## Practical framework

Capsules to reach the dose, from the Nutri Tailor range, all made in the UK: [Classic Collagen](/products/classic-collagen), hydrolysed marine and bovine peptides, 11 g of collagen protein per 12 g serving, two tablespoons once a day; [Creamy Vanilla Collagen](/products/creamy-vanilla-collagen), 11 g of collagen protein per 15 g serving. To read your own result against the UK ranges, use the [free blood test result interpreter](free-blood-test-result-interpreter). This is a summary of published research, not personal health advice. Talk to your GP or a registered nutritional therapist before changing what you take, especially if you are pregnant, have a diagnosed condition or are under ongoing care.

## Common misconceptions

That more collagen works faster: above the doses the trials used there is no extra effect, only more side effects. That the front of the bottle states the dose: read the per capsule figure and the serving size on the back. That the NHS figure is a toxic threshold: it is the level below which harm is unlikely, which is a different thing.
