# Should you take iron with coffee or tea?

## Summary

Keep tea and coffee at least an hour clear of iron, on the far side that matters. In the classic isotope studies, a cup of tea with a meal cut non-haem iron absorption by 64% and coffee by 39%, and black tea inhibited absorption from a bread meal by 79 to 94%. The asymmetry is the useful part: coffee an hour before a meal caused no reduction, while an hour after inhibited as much as drinking it with the meal. The 2017 UK stable-isotope trial showed a one-hour gap after the meal roughly halves tea's inhibition, from about 37% down to 18%. Milk in the tea changes little.

## How it works

The inhibitors are polyphenols, the tannin family in tea and the chlorogenic acids in coffee, which bind non-haem iron in the gut into complexes the body cannot take up. The effect is concentration-dependent: doubling the strength of instant coffee in the classic study dropped fractional absorption from an already reduced level to under 1%. Haem iron from meat is largely unaffected, which is why the interaction matters most for plant-source iron and for supplements.

## Effective dose

The numbers worth remembering: tea with a meal reduced non-haem iron absorption by 64% and coffee by 39% in the dual-isotope studies (Morck 1983); black tea inhibited absorption from a bread meal by 79 to 94%, cocoa by 71%, and common herb teas by 47 to 84% (Hurrell 1999). In the UK stable-isotope trial, fractional absorption from a porridge meal was 5.7% with water, 3.6% with tea taken alongside, and back to 5.7% when the tea came an hour later (Ahmad Fuzi 2017).

## Forms compared

The interaction applies to iron in food and iron in supplements alike, whichever form the supplement uses, because polyphenol binding happens in the gut before absorption. ## Timing

The rule has a direction. Coffee taken an hour before a meal produced no reduction, while the same cup an hour after the meal inhibited absorption as strongly as drinking it with the food (Morck 1983). The 2017 trial softened the after-side picture: a one-hour gap after the meal cut tea's inhibition roughly in half, from about 37% to 18%. The practical schedule: have your tea or coffee before or well clear of iron-rich meals and iron supplements, and hold a minimum one-hour gap afterwards, longer if your iron matters to you right now. ## Safety profile

Nothing about the combination is unsafe; the cost is silent, absorbed less iron over months. That matters mainly for people already running low: heavy tea drinkers who take their brew with every meal, plant-based eaters relying on non-haem iron, and anyone whose ferritin sits near the deficiency threshold, where a daily 40 to 90% haircut on meal iron adds up.

## Special populations

Menstruating women, pregnant women, plant-based eaters and endurance runners carry the highest iron demands and gain the most from the separation habit. Anyone with confirmed iron deficiency should set their plan with their GP, and the timing rule applies just as much to prescribed iron as to shop-bought.

## Practical framework

Run the habit in three moves. One, shift the brew: tea and coffee before meals or between them, not with or straight after iron-rich food or an iron supplement. Two, hold the hour: a minimum one-hour gap after eating halves the damage, and longer is better while you are actively rebuilding iron. ## Common misconceptions

That milk in the tea neutralises the effect: the polyphenol series found adding milk made little or no difference. That the interaction only concerns supplements: the classic studies measured ordinary meals, and plant-source meal iron takes the same hit. That before and after are equivalent: coffee an hour before a meal cost nothing, while the same cup an hour after inhibited fully, so the direction of the gap is the whole trick.
