How it works

Each Oura score is a weighted summary of overnight measurements compared against your personal baseline. Because the baseline is personal, the same absolute HRV can produce different scores in different people. Safety profile

A wearable score is not a diagnosis, and some patterns warrant clinical review rather than lifestyle adjustment. NHS guidance is the right route for palpitations, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, a persistent fever, or a resting heart rate that stays well above your normal alongside feeling unwell. Oura''s temperature reading reports deviation from your own baseline rather than a thermometer reading, so a persistent elevation is a prompt to check how you feel and to use a thermometer, not a result in itself.

Practical framework

A workable routine is to ignore single days and review the trend weekly. If readiness or HRV trends downward across two weeks, work through the areas in order of evidence. Check sleep regularity first, since irregular timing degrades most contributors. Review training load and alcohol next, because both reliably lower overnight HRV. If the trend persists with those addressed, blood markers are the next sensible step, since iron status, vitamin D and thyroid function can each move heart rate, sleep quality and energy, and none of them shows up on a wearable directly.
