Zinc forms split into the well-absorbed organic group (citrate, gluconate, picolinate, bisglycinate) and the poorly absorbed zinc oxide. In the reference isotope-tracer comparison, citrate and gluconate absorbed identically at about 61 percent while oxide managed about 50 percent, with some individuals absorbing almost nothing from oxide. Picolinate was not in that study, so its best-absorbed reputation rests on older, weaker evidence. The decision that matters more than form is dose and duration: sustained zinc above roughly 25mg daily can drive copper deficiency, which is why long courses belong alongside copper or under advice.
Zinc is absorbed through saturable transporters in the small intestine, so fractional absorption falls as doses rise, and the compound determines how readily the zinc ion is released and held soluble at the gut wall. Once absorbed, zinc is zinc; the form question is entirely an absorption and tolerability question.
UK needs are 9.5mg daily for men and 7mg for women, met by most diets containing meat, shellfish, dairy or legumes. Dose by elemental zinc. UK government advice is not to exceed 25mg daily long term unless a doctor advises it.
In the randomised double-masked isotope-tracer crossover at 10mg elemental zinc, citrate absorbed at a median 61.3 percent, gluconate at 60.9 percent, statistically indistinguishable, while oxide absorbed at 49.9 percent, significantly lower, and three of fifteen participants absorbed little or none from oxide. Picolinate and bisglycinate were not in that comparison; the picolinate superiority claim traces to a small 1987 study using a weaker method. Practical read: any organic form does the job; avoid oxide where absorption matters.
Absorbed best away from food, but zinc on an empty stomach commonly causes nausea, so with a light meal is the sustainable pattern for most. Separate from iron and calcium supplements and from tea and coffee by a couple of hours, and separate from certain antibiotics by four hours.
The signature risk of enthusiastic zinc use is copper deficiency, because zinc induces a gut protein that binds copper and blocks its uptake; sustained intakes above roughly 25mg daily build that risk, and cases present as anaemia and nerve symptoms. Short high-dose courses for a cold sit outside that window; a daily habit above the ceiling does not.
Vegans and vegetarians absorb less zinc from plant-heavy diets rich in phytates and may sit nearer the supplement case. People with gut conditions affecting absorption, and heavy drinkers, run lower zinc. Pregnancy needs are met by standard antenatal provision; extra zinc in pregnancy belongs with a midwife or GP.
Zinc binds tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and reduces their absorption, so separate by four hours. Zinc and iron compete when taken together as supplements. Long-course zinc depletes copper, the interaction inside the bottle.

Decide in three steps. First, establish the case for zinc at all: a plant-heavy diet, a malabsorptive condition, or tested low status, rather than habit. Second, pick any organic form and skip oxide; among the organics, price and gut comfort can decide, since the tracer evidence separates the group from oxide rather than ranking within it.
