Theanine is the amino acid in green tea, and the human trials are small but consistent in direction. A four week crossover trial in 30 healthy adults using 200 mg daily found lower depression and trait anxiety scores and better sleep quality scores, with the sleep gains showing up as easier sleep onset and less disturbance rather than sedation. An acute trial found a 200 mg theanine drink lowered subjective stress within an hour and salivary cortisol at three hours. The honest label is promising rather than proven: the trials are small and the four week study had manufacturer involvement. The studied dose is 200 mg a day, the number to match rather than whatever a label contains.
Theanine crosses the blood brain barrier and is structurally similar to glutamate, the brain's main excitatory neurotransmitter. It appears to modulate glutamate and GABA signalling and reliably increases alpha wave activity on EEG, the brain rhythm associated with relaxed alertness. This is why theanine is described as calming without being sedating. It does not act on the GABA receptor the way sleep drugs do, which fits the trial picture of easier sleep onset without next day grogginess.

The trials recruited healthy adults, so anyone with diagnosed anxiety or depression should raise theanine with their GP as an adjunct question rather than a replacement for proper support. Evidence in pregnancy and breastfeeding is absent, so the default is to avoid. For teenagers and children the studied evidence is thin and largely limited to small attention studies, so the same caution applies.
Theanine is widely paired with caffeine, where the attention research suggests the two together give alertness with less of the jittery edge, and theanine partially offsets caffeine's effect on sleep. Match the studied protocol: 200 mg daily for at least four weeks, then judge against something concrete, such as how long it takes to fall asleep and how wired evenings feel. Pairing with caffeine in the morning is a separate use with separate evidence, and it is fine to do both. If nothing has shifted by six weeks, theanine is unlikely to be your lever and the money is better spent elsewhere.
Theanine is not a sedative, and taking more of it does not produce sleepiness the way a higher dose of a sleep drug would. The trials point at lower arousal and easier sleep onset, not being knocked out. It is also not the same thing as green tea extract, which contains caffeine and catechins. And the calm it produces is subtle over weeks, not a felt wave twenty minutes after a capsule.
