How long does L-theanine take to work?

Summary

L-theanine has two timelines in the trials. Taken as a single 200 mg dose, it lowered subjective stress about an hour after the dose and salivary cortisol at three hours in 34 healthy adults (White 2016). Taken daily at 200 mg for four weeks, a crossover trial in 30 healthy adults found lower trait anxiety and depression scores and better sleep quality scores, with the sleep gain showing as easier onset and less disturbance rather than sedation (Hidese 2019). The fair label is promising rather than proven: the trials are small and the four-week study had manufacturer involvement. The studied dose is 200 mg a day, which is the number to match.

How it works

Theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea leaves. The trials measured what it did rather than proving how, but the acute cortisol finding at three hours and the subjective stress finding at one hour point to a same-day action on the stress response (White 2016), while the four-week sleep and anxiety findings suggest an effect that builds with daily use (Hidese 2019). The systematic review notes the mechanism claims about alpha waves and GABA rest on smaller or older studies (Williams 2020).

Effective dose

What dose did the trials use? 200 mg, in both the acute and the four-week trial, and the review found the suggestive effects at 200 to 400 mg (Williams 2020). Take 200 mg before a stressful event if that is the aim, or 200 mg daily for four weeks if sleep or general stress is the aim, and judge at four weeks. More has not been shown to work faster.

Forms compared

Does the form change how long it takes? Not in the evidence. The acute trial used a drink and the four-week trial used capsules, and both used 200 mg (White 2016; Hidese 2019). Green tea contains theanine but at a few tens of milligrams a cup alongside caffeine, so it is not the same experiment. Capsules and powders of pure L-theanine deliver the same compound; the point is to match 200 mg, not to pick a format. Nutri Tailor's L-theanine capsule is 200 mg.

Timing

How quickly does L-theanine start working? In the acute trial, subjective stress was lower one hour after a 200 mg dose and salivary cortisol was lower at three hours (White 2016). That is the basis for taking it before something stressful rather than every day.

How long does it take for L-theanine to work for sleep? The four-week crossover trial measured at four weeks and found better sleep quality scores, easier onset and less disturbance, without sedation (Hidese 2019). The trial dosed daily rather than timed to bed, though many people take it in the evening.

Is that proven? No. The samples were 30 and 34 people, and the systematic review calls the effects suggestive (Williams 2020). Promising is the honest word.

| What is measured | When it responds | | --- | --- | | Subjective stress, single 200 mg dose | about 1 hour (White 2016) | | Salivary cortisol, single dose | 3 hours | | Sleep quality scores, 200 mg daily | measured at 4 weeks (Hidese 2019) | | Trait anxiety scores, 200 mg daily | measured at 4 weeks | | Cognitive performance | no change in the acute trial |

Safety profile

Theanine was well tolerated in the trials, with no sedation and no cognitive impairment reported (White 2016; Hidese 2019). The evidence caution is about size and independence: small samples, short durations, and manufacturer involvement in the four-week study. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: no trial data, discuss with a midwife or GP. This is a summary of published research, not personal health advice.

Special populations

Healthy adults: both trials were in this group, so the timelines above belong to it. People on prescribed tablets for blood pressure or the nervous system: GP or pharmacist first. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: no data. Children: no data; not for self-supplementation.

Interactions

What slows it down? Judging the daily use too early, or expecting a sedative effect it does not have; the sleep gain was in onset and disturbance scores, not drowsiness (Hidese 2019). Caffeine does not cancel it, and the two are often studied together. If you take prescribed tablets that lower blood pressure or act on the nervous system, speak to a GP or pharmacist before adding theanine.

Guideline positions

Hidese 2019 (randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover, 30 adults): 200 mg a day for four weeks, lower SDS, STAI-trait and PSQI scores; two authors employed by the ingredient manufacturer. White 2016 (34 adults): 200 mg theanine-based drink, lower subjective stress at one hour and salivary cortisol at three hours, no cognitive change. Williams 2020 (systematic review): suggestive at 200 to 400 mg, constrained by small samples and short durations. There is no NHS or EFSA position on theanine.

Practical framework

Decide which timeline you are testing. For a stressful event, 200 mg about an hour before, once, and notice whether it changed anything. For sleep or ongoing stress, 200 mg daily for four weeks with a note of how you sleep at the start, then a decision. If four weeks pass with no change, theanine is not your lever. Common misconceptions

Claim: theanine knocks you out like a sleeping tablet. The sleep gain was easier onset and less disturbance without sedation (Hidese 2019). Claim: it works instantly. The acute effect was measured at one hour, not minutes (White 2016). Claim: it is proven. The review calls it suggestive and the trials are small (Williams 2020). Claim: green tea gives the same dose. A cup carries a fraction of 200 mg.
