Magnesium sulfate is magnesium bound to sulfate, the same compound as Epsom salt. In a capsule it provides both minerals in a measured dose.

How does magnesium sulfate in a capsule compare with Epsom salt baths or other magnesium forms?
Magnesium sulfate is the same compound as Epsom salt. In a bath very little magnesium is absorbed through the skin; in a capsule it is taken by mouth at a measured dose, so the magnesium reaches the gut where it can be absorbed. Compared with citrate or bisglycinate it also supplies sulfate, which the liver uses in processing many compounds, and it can loosen the bowel at higher doses. It suits people who want the sulfate as well as the magnesium.
Why capsules rather than tablets?
Tablets need binders, fillers and a coating to hold their shape. A capsule is a cellulose shell around the powder, so it carries no binders and breaks down quickly once swallowed.
