N-acetyl glucosamine is a form of glucosamine, the building block of cartilage and of the mucus layer that lines the gut. It is a different compound from glucosamine sulphate.
The body makes it from glucose, and it is used in joint cartilage and in the protective lining of the digestive tract. People take this form when they want it for the gut as well as the joints.
Each capsule provides N-acetyl glucosamine with nothing else apart from the vegetable shell. It is often chosen by people who cannot take glucosamine sulphate because of shellfish or sulphate sensitivity.

N-acetyl glucosamine or glucosamine sulphate: what is the difference?
Glucosamine sulphate is the form most sold for joints, usually made from shellfish shells, and it comes with sulphate and often with salt as a stabiliser. N-acetyl glucosamine is a different compound, the form the body uses in the mucus layer of the gut as well as in cartilage, and it is made without shellfish here, so it suits people with a shellfish allergy or a sulphate sensitivity. People take the sulphate when the aim is joints only, and N-acetyl glucosamine when the gut lining is part of the picture or the sulphate form does not suit them.
Why capsules rather than tablets?
Tablets need binders, fillers and a coating to hold their shape. A capsule is a cellulose shell around the powder, so it carries no binders and breaks down quickly once swallowed.
