Alpha lipoic acid is a compound the body makes in small amounts and uses in energy production inside cells. It is unusual in dissolving in both water and fat.
It is found in small amounts in spinach, broccoli and organ meats. People take it as a supplement for its antioxidant role and as part of practitioner protocols for energy and nerve support.

Alpha lipoic acid as usually sold is a mixture of the R and S forms; R-lipoic acid is the form the body makes and the more active of the two, and it is also less stable and dearer. These capsules provide standard alpha lipoic acid, which is the form used in most of the research and suits people taking a moderate dose once or twice a day. If you have been advised to take the R form specifically, look for a product labelled R-lipoic acid.
When should I take antioxidants?

What causes oxidative stress?
Pollution, UV exposure, processed foods, stress, intense exercise, and normal metabolism all generate free radicals.
Who is alpha lipoic acid best for?
