Lifestyle tips

How to boost your results

Exercise

The first half of the cycle is governed by oestrogen (period to ovulation). This creates a feeling of higher energy levels, makes more intense exercise accessible and will generally encourage a sense of vitality when putting the body under a slightly higher amount of strain. Comparatively, from ovulation to the next period, progesterone levels rise which has significant impacts on energy metabolism. Swapping to lower intensity bodyweight workouts, walking, yoga and Pilates means regular activity remains totally acceptable but fatigue, increased hunger levels, sweet cravings and bloating will be avoided. It can take some women time to adjust to this if they have been consistently pushing themselves hard for a long period of time. In order to reset you would want to decrease intensity of exercise all month for 2-3 months (focus on regularity and consistency of training rather than level of output or calories burned).

Caffeine and alcohol

Same divide as above - first half of the cycle these are fine, second half of the cycle you would want to consider limiting or removing them totally if possible. This can vastly improve elements such as period pains, constipation and changes in sleep quality that happen in the run up to a woman's period.

Social interaction

Oestrogen makes women social, progesterone makes women nest! Many women can find giving themselves an increased amount of recovery time from intense social situations in the second half of their cycle can prevent anxiety and mood instability in the run up to their period. It will also prevent mental fatigue. Ultimately, be guided by what your body is telling you.
